Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott
Publ. & Syn.Schott, Gen. Fil. 1: t. 9 (1834). - Polypodium filix-mas L., Sp. Pl.: 1090 (1753). Lectotype (BM): Europe. Herb. Clifford: 475, Polypodium 10 (Jonsell and Jarvis 1994: 149).
NotesMontgomery and Wagner Jr. (1993) suggested that Dryopteris filix-mas is an allotetraploid species from the diploids D. caucasica (A. Braun) Fraser-Jenk. & Corley and D. oreades Fomin, at least as concerns European plants. They expressed some doubts whether the western North American plants had the same origin, but that does not concern us here as these American plants do not reach the Arctic.
